6 Fall Promotion Ideas to Turn up Sales as The Leaves Turn Colors

Written by Ben Grossman | Sep 15, 2022 2:03:58 PM

Fall is all about getting back to school, leaf peeping, apple picking, and getting ready for Trick-or-Treating. Consumers are switching from the slower schedule of summer to the fast-paced activity level that comes with kids' activities and getting ready for the cooler weather while enjoying autumn. As a business, this is a good time to adjust your focus and take advantage of the potential for the season.

Businesses that plan ahead and execute can definitely get ahead and grow. Here are six fun fall promotion ideas to help get you going.

1. Do Sales/Promos (or Around) Autumn Holidays

Build your fall promotions around the key dates of autum. Come up with a theme that relates to these major milestones.

Some of the big fall milestones include:

  • Columbus Day (Oct. 10)
  • Daylight Saving Ends (Nov. 6)
  • Veteran's Day (Nov. 11)

Local businesses can offer campaigns around local sports and school activities to engage with the community.

Keep in mind that a lot of other businesses will be promoting around these days so look for ways that you can stand out.  Take a look at what's been done before and think about a new twist. Also, review what has been successful for you in the past to see if you can build off of that.

2. Start (Or Bolster) Your Loyalty Rewards Program

Loyalty and rewards programs can be a boon for any business. Approximately 3 out of 4 U.S. adults are involved in at least one loyalty program with a company. Starting one this fall can help streamline your marketing efforts, improve your analytics, and boost customer retention, even when the weather cools off. Plus, you will be ahead of the game for the holidays.

One of the only drawbacks to loyalty programs is that many enlisted members are inactive. But fall-themed loyalty messaging is actually a great way to get those who are dormant back in the mix. Offer autumn discounts that are too hard to pass. Or consider a contest with a fall travel package as the prize.

3. Warm Up Your Email Campaigns

Drip email marketing makes life easy. Still, people are excited for the colorful months of fall when it comes, and a little shift to more seasonal language can help match their enthusiasm. Write about things like the crisp cool days of autumn, warm apple pies, and the beauty of leaves turning to connect with customers in their fall appreciation.

Toss in a couple of pumpkins, some mums, and a colorful leaf emoji, and you're good to go.

4. Set Up a Family Night Event

Families are busier with back-to-school, football, soccer, and other activities. Set up an event to let them spend some time together having fun. Capitalizing on this unique time of the year is a great way to promote your business, or even package together goods or services you haven't combined before.

Some fun fall business ideas include:

  • Hosting a lawn games/sporting events competition or tournament
  • Hosting a pumpkin-flavor theme social
  • Leading a family-friendly movie night

Family night is also a great time to cross-promote with other local businesses, or even tie in any digital or eCommerce components to your enterprise.

5. Attend Local Events

Fall brings community social events and festivals as people can still easily gather outside. Make your way to these fall-inspired activities and meet up with existing customers while reaching a new audience. Even if your business operates largely online, this is a great time to connect with community members and local businesses.

6. Plan for the End of Fall into the Holidays Promotions

Consumers are settling into the sweater months of fall and enjoying their pumpkin lattes while planning hikes in the woods and apple picking. But this leads to Thanksgiving and the kickoff of the holidays. Nobody wants to rush through this time, but looking ahead can ease the stress later on. Set people up now to come back when the shopping rush heats up.

Give hints about what you will be offering and the kinds of activities you will host. The earlier you can start those promotions, the higher your attendance will be.

Take advantage of the shift from one season to the next as you look to connect with your customers. Look at how their schedules and interests are changing and adapt to meet their new needs.
